Functional Inorganics

New Materials for Device Innovation

Image of two scientists seeing research results

Overview Functional inorganic technology controls the electric, thermal, optical and even flexible properties of the inorganic materials through innovative technology. Moreover, it utilizes the advanced synthesis and processing technologies of oxides, intermetallic compounds, and metallic materials.

Most of the devices may be classified based on their functionality, such as storage of energy, transformation of energy, etc. In order to obtain higher efficiencies, materials with superior properties, such as dielectric and thermoelectric features are highly desired. In addition, diverse functions are also required, as new devices are further developed. Finally, controlling the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of inorganic materials is essential to the success of device innovation

Images that symbolize science and technology

Technology Trend Research on new material discovery has become more important than ever as device trends move to smaller, multifunctional or new functions that previously did not exist. To achieve these objectives, characteristics of phonons, spin, electrons, ions, and defects need to be controlled by atomic- or nano- manipulation. Other key technologies under development include simulation assisted, new composition development, grain refineing, nanocomposites, synthesis and sintering. The functional inorganics can be categorized as one dimensional (nano-wire), two dimensional materials (nano-sheets) or functional bulk materials. Depending on these categories, the synthesis methods or the final properties can vary greatly.
