Abstract

Augmented and virtual reality (AR&VR) are undoubtedly among the most disruptive technologies of our time. After the introduction of the smartphone in the 1990s, these wearable consumer devices are destined to change our daily lives again in a profound way by delivering radically different experiences in social communication, education, medicine, retail, and gaming. A wide-scale adoption of these technologies will require development of comfortable, fashionable and lightweight headsets at a notably reduced cost that can operate at low power, and offer wireless operation with very high data transfer speeds and increased cybersecurity. One key technological challenge towards reaching these ambitious goals revolves around the creation of next generation displays.. Currently, the quality of VR displays is insufficient for a user to experience virtual worlds as real. Here, this perspective discusses recent advances and a personal perspective on the display technology for VR that is required to deliver the ultimate user experience.
