Hydroxybenzenes as Protective Additives for High Voltage Lithium Ion Battery

Abstract
A novel type of additives based on hydroxybenzene derivatives were investigated as to stabilize electrolyte on high voltage cathode surface. Oxidation potential calculation and electrochemical characterization showed that these additives form a protective layer on overlithiated layered oxide cathode prior to carbonate electrolyte. Adding small amounts of hydroxybenzene to the liquid electrolyte exhibit less capacity fading and better high temperature storage. Surface analysis identified that passivation film is well constructed on cathode surface with 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene additive.
